BSc Soc Sci PGCE Cert. Spld
I have 15 years experience teaching in primary schools in Barnet. I began my career as a class teacher, working in years 3, 4, 5 and 6. I have also been year group leader, assessment co-ordinator, teacher governor and a member of the school senior management team. My last four years were spent as special educational needs and inclusion co-ordinator, managing teaching staff and resources and planning programmes for children with special needs.
I was very involved in working with secondary schools to help with the transition programme from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3 as well as working closely with infant schools to enable year 2 children to transfer smoothly to their junior school.
I have a degree in psychology and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I also have the OCR Level 5 Certificate for teachers of learners with Specific Learning Difficulties, including Dyslexia. As well as teaching, I am a keen writer and accomplished author. In 2006 I wrote two collections of plays for use in primary schools, published by Hopscotch and available through their website.
In 2007 I set up my own consultancy called "Surviving School Transfer", advising parents on all aspects of secondary transfer. I then went on to write my book "Teach yourself getting your child into secondary school" which was published in 2009 by Hodder as part of their bestselling 'Teach Yourself' range. This book provides help to parents, arming them with up to date knowledge, facts and rules about the transfer system as well as providing them with realistic expectations about future schools based on thorough assessments.
As assessment co-ordinator and special educational needs co-ordinator, I have delivered INSET for my Local Authority and have presented Seminars to parents about key parenting issues. I have an excellent understanding of the information parents need to have in order to make an informed judgement about the ability of their children and how to move them forward in order to get the best education available.
I live in London and am married with two children.
